About us

Meet the Team

  • Graham Gibson

As the founder of Fortis Mortgage Brokers I am proud to have a team of amazing people that I work with who help me deliver quality advice and a first class level of service.

You’ll see from reading our profiles that we have a great deal of expertise and experience in the finance industry and you’ll get to know a little about our individual characters too.

I have been in the financial services market since 1988. Working for a large insurance company I progressed to area manager responsible for 40 advisers and client service staff. My time with this company taught me about financial services but more importantly about managing people and providing excellent client service.

I had a successful track record with this company and was one of 30 surviving managers from an original total of 200 when I took the decision to go it alone and work for myself establishing a mortgage broker business in 2001.

    What is your greatest achievement?
Like most parents I feel my greatest achievement is my three fantastic children Scott, Ben and Chloe. Life dealt the boys a really poor hand as they both have severe special needs and sadly Scott passed way aged just 26 in 2017 from an unrelated illness.

Scott always had a smile on his face and would laugh at the smallest of things as does Ben, which is heartening and a huge lesson about life and adversity. Chloe is just a fantastic human being, daughter and sister (although this may change now she has hit her teens!)

What do you do for fun?
I cycle and one of my most fulfilling moments was raising funds for Openwork’s Cares for Kids charitable foundation by cycling from São Paulo to Rio in Brazil and taking part in the London Night Ride as well as other bike rides for similar charities. I have a passion for a certain London football team who I go and watch regularly. I have also taken up martial arts again after many years off but when it is time to relax I like to walk my Bulldog “Boycie” or enjoy a nice meal and fine wine with friends and family.

    What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Brazil was amazing but I enjoy travelling to different places. Just give me some sun, beach and a mojito and I am happy!

What’s number 1 on your bucket list?
I’m always singing Sinatra songs around the house and would love to sing in front of a big band … although a few singing lessons first may come in handy!

    Who do you admire most?
My children; for their courage, strength and laughter!

  • Steve Burgess

Steve is a mortgage and protection adviser and has worked in the broker and financial industry for nearly 12 years. He spent many years at Bupa and then worked with a number of brokerage companies dealing with protection and health insurance for both individuals and companies.

    What’s your greatest achievement?
Getting my mortgage exams! I only really enjoyed sports at school so studying on my own while working full time was quite an achievement especially as I breezed through the exams. It’s funny how studying is much more interesting when it’s out of choice!

What do you do for fun?
I play a lot of sports including football and golf. I also go to the gym often and love keeping fit – healthy body, healthy mind!

    What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Malta has been my favourite ‘go to’ holiday destination. I love that it’s only a few hours away, the weather is beautiful most of the year, the island is steeped in history (I’m bit of a history buff) and it also feels like a home away from home.

What’s number 1 on your bucket list?
To travel to Machu Pichu. It would be a massive adventure to trek through the jungle for days just to get to see the ruins. I hate camping so think I would struggle although I’m sure it would all worth it in the end!

    Who do you most admire?
It’s a bit of a strange one – Arnold Schwarzenegger! I admire his work ethic and that he has turned his hand to many things and been successful. His 6 rules to success are so relevant now and I actually have them up in my office. And of course he was awesome in the 80s action films!

  • Justin Andrews

Justin is a mortgage and protection adviser, transitioning from property development – he has experience of investing in property including buying and selling for over 7 years. Formerly a technical engineering director of a manufacturing company he thrives on finding the best solution for any given situation.

    What’s your greatest achievement?
British Champion sounds good, doesn’t it! Competing in my Subaru Impreza in hill climbs and circuit sprints – I was the HSA Speed Championship overall winner in 2017

What do you do for fun?
Apart from racing my car I enjoy pretty much all sports, I still play football to keep fit, enjoy golf but I’m never too far away from motorsport – as a spectator I love attending Le Mans 24hours, also I am slowly ticking off the Formula 1 European venues.

    What’s your favourite holiday destination?
I try not to go to the same place twice, it’s a big world out there! Mauritius for the Summer, Les Arcs for the winter.

What’s number 1 on your bucket list?
The Inca trail to Machu Picchu, Peru. One day – when the kids are a bit older.

    Who do you most admire?
Alex Zinardi – In complete awe of the man for the utter determination and his will to succeed no matter what is thrown at you. A Formula 1 driver and double American CART champion – he nearly died in a horrific CART crash that removed both his legs. Dissatisfied with the limitations of prosthetic limbs available commercially at the time, Zanardi designed and built his own custom legs that enabled him to compete again – winning races in the World Touring Car Championship. He also has 4 paralympic Gold medals for handcycling.

  • Lisa Bateman

Lisa spent 8 years with Halifax as a sales adviser (loans, credit cards, insurances) before becoming Graham’s PA when he worked with another brokerage. She moved to health care for a year before rejoining Graham at Fortis as his and Steve’s PA.

Lisa has a level 3 diploma (distinction) in psychology, a level 3 NVQ in Health & Social Care and is currently studying a humanities and creative writing honours degree … for fun!

Lisa works full time as well as studying as she loves to learn new things and is obsessed with history and ancient cultures – Greek, Roman, Egyptian with the Tudors being her favourite.

    What’s your greatest achievement?
Bringing up my two fabulous boys and overcoming personal loss. Following the death of my first son in 2005, I learned not to let anything knock me down or phase me. I enjoy new challenges and have completed a number of charity runs – one of which ended in an operation on my knee and a rather attractive leg brace for several months, but it hasn’t stopped me taking part in recent runs.

What do you do for fun?
I manage a Sunday league youth team, it’s so much fun and great to be able to make a positive impact on young people’s lives. I love to read and prefer historical fiction or a good old fashioned vampire novel always goes down well! I enjoy watching movies and am a fan of anything Marvel which is probably the boys’ influence!

    What’s your favourite holiday destination?
I love Cornwall; it’s my favourite place to be especially in the sea, surfing with my boys.

What’s number 1 on your bucket list?
To visit the ancient ruins in Greece and Rome.

    Who do you most admire?
Hmmm, probably my husband for putting up with me and my crazy ideas like signing up for a mud filled obstacle course race and running it straight after 1.5 hours of football training on a Saturday morning; popping out for the afternoon and coming back with a puppy and insisting he comes (appropriately dressed!) to every themed/fancy dress event I can find!
